Guided Archaeology Tours of Green's Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve

Join SCDNR Heritage Trust archaeologists for a free guided tour of the archaeological excavations at Green's Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve located at 99 Squire Pope Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Free guided tours of Green's Shell Enclosure Heritage Preserve will take place at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. daily from Tuesday, January 7 through Thursday, January 16, 2025. Each tour is limited to 15 participants, and pre-registration is encouraged.

Tours will be guided by an archaeologist, will last approximately 45 minutes, and will include experimental archaeology demonstrations. All tours are free.

2. Where should I park? Please park in the public parking area located at Green Shell Park, 99 Squire Pope Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

3. Are restroom facilities available? Restroom facilities are located next to the parking area.

4. How far will I have to walk? Following SCDNR signage, you will walk approximately 100 feet from the parking area to the check-in desk. From that point, you may walk up to half a mile on your tour as we visit archaeologists actively excavating.

5. Where should I check in for my tour? Please follow SCDNR signage and check in with an SCDNR Heritage Trust archaeologist at the check-in desk located approximately 100 feet from the parking area.

6. Is there a minimum age for tour participants? Tour participants of all ages are welcome. Individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian at all times.

7. Do I have to bring my printed or digital ticket? Tickets do not need to be presented. Visitors can provide the name they used for pre-registration at the check-in desk upon arrival to be checked in for their tour.

8. Will tours take place if it is raining? All guided tours will be canceled if inclement weather occurs. Cancellation emails will be sent out to pre-registered tour participants as soon as an inclement weather determination is made (no later than one hour before your event time).

9. If my tour is canceled due to inclement weather, can I take a tour on another day? Yes, please arrive at the check-in desk prior to a 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. tour time on another day, and you will be added to the roster for the next available tour.
