How does the dominance of US Black culture influence the way we see Black performativity, more specifically how does it influence Black masculine posturing? During my interactive exchange, I will attempt to review this, going from the enslaved male buck to Uncle Tom. Archetypes that still influence the way we expect Black masculine posturing.
From WEB DuBois to Malcolm X to the Black Panthers to Fela Kuti. From Grace Jones to Basquiat to Marlon Riggs and Tongue Untied. From 2Pac to Buju Banton to Vybez Kartel to Burna Boy. From Tyson Beckford to Romelu Lukaku to social media workout gurus. You have some from Biggie to Rick Ross who challenge this…Oh we can’t forget about that W.A.P.
In essence, while much has changed in the way Black masculinity is expected to be performed, much still remains in a framework that I will lay out through using music videos and theories from different mostly Black intersectional feminists.
