English Debate Competition
Format: The English Debate Competition will follow the Asian Debate style, which consists of two teams: the Proposition team and the Opposition team. Each team will consist of three speakers.
Motion Selection: The competition organizers will select a range of motions or topics on which the debate will be based. These motions will be announced before the competition, allowing participants to prepare their arguments in advance.
Speaker Roles: Each team will have three speakers who will fulfil specific roles during the debate.
a. Proposition Team:
First Proposition Speaker: Introduces the motion, defines key terms, and outlines the team's main arguments.
Second Proposition Speaker: Expands on the team's arguments, presents additional evidence, and rebuts opposition arguments.
Third Proposition Speaker: Summarizes the team's case, reinforces key points, and provides a strong closing statement.
b. Opposition Team:
First Opposition Speaker: Provides an opening statement, challenges the proposition's arguments, and introduces the opposition's main arguments.
Second Opposition Speaker: Expands on the opposition's arguments, presents additional evidence, and rebuts proposition arguments.
Third Opposition Speaker: Summarizes the opposition's case, reinforces key points, and provides a strong closing statement.
Time Allocation: Each speaker will be given a specific time limit to present their arguments and rebuttals. The following time allocation is recommended:
a. First Proposition and First Opposition Speaker: 3 minutes
b. Second Proposition and Second Opposition Speaker: 4 minutes
c. Third Proposition and Third Opposition Speaker: 5 minutes
Rebuttals: After the second speaker from each team presents their arguments, there will be a designated period for rebuttals. During this time, speakers can address the opposing team's arguments, provide counterarguments, and challenge the opposition's case. The time allocated for rebuttals is typically 4 minutes for each team.
Points of Information: Both the Proposition and Opposition teams can offer points of information to the speaker currently presenting their arguments. Points of information should be brief interjections seeking clarification or challenging a particular argument. The speaker may choose to accept or reject the points of information. However, accepting points of information is encouraged and can demonstrate a speaker's ability to think on their feet.
Judges and Scoring: A panel of judges will evaluate the debate based on various criteria, including content, delivery, style, rebuttals, and overall effectiveness of the arguments. Each judge will assign scores to each team, and the team with the highest cumulative score will be declared the winner.
Rules of Conduct: Participants are expected to maintain a respectful and professional demeanour throughout the debate. Personal attacks, disrespectful behaviour, or any form of discrimination will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification.
Language Usage: The debate will be conducted entirely in English. Participants are expected to demonstrate fluency and proficiency in the language.
Timekeeping: A designated timekeeper will keep track of the time allocated to each speaker and notify them when their time is about to expire. Participants should adhere to the allocated time limits to ensure a fair and organized debate.
