DESCRIPTION

Many of us have used containerized environments when working on web platforms - but for many of us, this technology is not much more than a step in the development setup process. Why are these containers used, and how do they help streamline configuration and management of the development environment?

This month at GRWebDev, Noah Jahn will lead us through a hands-on workshop using Docker, a popular tool for creating environment containers. We’ll learn how to write and optimize our own Docker files and understand how Docker is used both locally and also in production. Join us at Start Garden on Monday, October 28th at 6pm!

PREREQUISITES

Attendees are encouraged to use their personal computers to take full advantage of this workshop. Some recommended base level knowledge sets include:

  • A general understanding of Docker or virtualization
  • A general understanding of the command line.
  • How to use a code editor or IDE.

In addition, the following tools should be installed:

  • Docker Desktop
  • A code editor such as VSCode or VSCodium
  • Git

OUR PRESENTER

Noah Jahn is a DevOps Engineer at SPARK Business Works (a local software development agency) building and maintaining infrastructure in AWS using Terraform/OpenTofu and automating deployments to that infrastructure using GitLab CI and GitHub actions. He also builds custom software applications for SPARK’s clients leveraging different JavaScript/Typescript frameworks. When Noah is not immersed in code, he can be found jamming on his Ukulele, playing video games with his pals, or sipping on some homemade ginger beer.
