Grrls to the Front - Jan 2025
Schedule
Mon Jan 13 2025 at 07:00 pm to 10:00 pm
UTC+00:00Location
The Wedgewood Rooms | Portsmouth, EN
Venue Location
We’re at the Wedgewood Rooms in the Edge of the Wedge (not the main room), so don’t worry—we’ve kept our safe, friendly space to connect and have fun.
Session Structure
Arriving: 7 pm – 7:30 pm
When you arrive, bring along a song idea you’d like to sing. Write it on the slip of paper provided, pop it in the jar, and find yourself a seat. This first half hour is a relaxed arrival time while we wait for everyone to get settled in.
Meeting Each Other & Warming Up: 7:30 pm – 8 pm
We’ll kick things off by introducing ourselves, then ease into some gentle movement, breathing, and vocal warm-ups. This part is all about “getting into our bodies” and preparing ourselves to sing. We’ll focus on building confidence, letting go of any embarrassment, and gelling as a group.
10-minute break
Singing Together: 8:10 pm – 9:15 pm
Together, we’ll sing some simple rounds to practise harmonising in a fun, relaxed way. There’s no pressure—no one sings alone, and you don’t need to worry about getting it perfect. This part is just about enjoying the shared experience of group singing.
10-minute break
Secret Gang Karaoke: 9:25 pm – 10 pm
This isn’t the usual karaoke where one person sings solo; instead, we’ll all join in on songs everyone knows! If we draw a song that’s unfamiliar, we’ll simply pick another until we find one everyone can enjoy singing together. We’ll go with the flow here—sometimes we’re so caught up in harmonising that we stay in the previous segment a bit longer!
Session End
About the Group
This is a vocal/community group for women and gender-nonconforming individuals who want a safe environment to meet people, play and make some noise—community is key! No experience needed, and all skill levels are welcome. We’re here to learn, have fun exploring our voices, building confidence, and connecting with others, not to prepare for live performance.
In a world where hate and fear can feel overwhelming, we’re here to foster friendships and work together through music.
The venue is at ground level and wheelchair accessible.
What to Bring and Wear
Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is important, especially when singing.
Comfortable Clothing: Wear something that allows you to move comfortably.
