DESCRIPTION
Join the artists behind the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s 2024 public art commissions for a lively discussion on the important role that public art can have in driving positive impact for Brooklyn. Panelists will discuss how placing artwork in communities, and not just inside the walls of institutions, helps to promote cultural identity, dialogue and social cohesion, and a positive sense of belonging.
Panelists will also reveal lessons learned from their experience at the Yard tied to community engagement. Here, panelists will provide insights for artists, curators, arts administrators, and developers alike on ways to think about public art installations as active sites for ongoing community engagement. This program is open to all industry professionals working in the arts and humanities and New Yorkers interested in learning more about ways to promote public art as a form of community equity-building and placemaking.
This program is part of the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s ARTS Series. This series uses the arts as conduit for community engagement and activation. Inspired by the Yard’s rotating calendar of exhibitions and public art, this series celebrates the positive effect the arts have on community dialogue and community enrichment. Programs will be rooted in dialogue, exchange, and collective artmaking and creation.
