Join us for the debut book reading and signing—a gathering to share our stories, connect in community, and reflect on healing (both physical and emotional), growth, and the lessons we learn (and unlearn) as we navigate life’s challenges.
Growing a Backbone is a collection of poetry and prose. In its pages, the search for healing is laid bare—a non-linear path through exhaustion, anger, and the unexpected moments of light. In its two sections, "PAIN" and "LIFE&LOVE," Silver gives voice to the battles fought in silence: the language of the "spoon theory," the exhaustion of seeking validation, living with chronic pain, and the daily courage required to simply show up despite it all.
This book is a roadmap of resilience, a manual for self-refuge, and a necessary reminder that suffering, when held and understood, can be transformed. In verse that is at once tender and incisive, Silver transforms the weight of life’s trials and tribulations into something luminous, weaving pain and resilience into a tapestry of unexpected beauty.
Silver began writing as a teenager as a way to process life’s challenges. After undergoing major spine surgery, she returned to writing as a source of healing and connection. A scientist and patient advocate, Silver earned her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she studied breast cancer and developed a deep passion for patient advocacy and health equity. She now combines her background in research with her passion for storytelling to inspire others on their own journeys. Despite living with chronic pain, she finds joy in traveling, exploring new foods and coffees, and spending time with loved ones and the family’s puppies: Tia and Mocha.
