Group Walk: War & Peace - People and Places associated with WWI

New for autumn 2025, this walk was first presented in September. Join us to visit buildings and memorials in Leicester associated with WWI (1914-18), pausing for a little information along the way. On this walk we include stories of some of the service men and women, reflecting people from different walks of life who played their part. We pass buildings with important wartime purposes and memorials to the fallen. A few locations have featured on our other walks, but much of the information presented here is new. This walk is led by one of our Walk Volunteers with an interest in the subject. This linear (one-way) walk finishes on University Road at the gates of Welford Road Cemetery. Bus stops are close by.

Booking

This walk is free to attend, but numbers are limited so please book via Eventbrite to secure your place. Alternatively, phone 0116 454 2860. Please note our phone line is answered during office hours only (Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm), not at weekends or bank holidays.

Adult places must be booked. Booking is not required for children. Children are welcome to attend, however they must be accompanied by an adult.

If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel via Eventbrite or contact us by phone (during office hours)so we can allow others the opportunity to attend.

Travel

Leicester city centre and University Road are served by buses. Please consider making your journey sustainably. To plan your journey on foot, by cycle, by public transport or car visit the Choose How You Move journey planner.

New Walkers

If you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete our Walker Registration form. You will receive an email in the days leading up to the event with information about how to complete the form. You only need to do this once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place on Eventbrite).

Dress for the weather

Remember to dress appropriately for the weather. Our group walks will go ahead in most weather. We recommend the following:

• Comfortable sturdy footwear
• Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain
• On cooler days wear appropriate layers and a coat/jacket
• Please bring a bottle of water with you.

Group size

We are keeping our group sizes manageable so that all our walkers feel comfortable attending the walk.
