About this Event
GROUP HARMONY - A celebration of the human voice
Saturday, DEC 27
From 4pm into the evening, join us for our workshop and performance series GROUP HARMONY:
° local musicians and neighborhood choir
° a new interactive video installation by Zach Willis
° radio broadcast in collaboration with KUTZ FM
Schedule of Event:
4pm - SHAPE NOTE CHOIR WORKSHOP
Join our SHAPE NOTE CHOIR, led by neighbor of the shop Paul Brown. Shape Note is a historic simplified notation system from the 18th century, making choir singing accessible to all levels of experience. During our hour long workshop, Paul will teach the basics of choir singing and reading shape note music.
5p - SHAPE NOTE CHOIR
Our choir will be lead in an arrangement of "The Sound of Silence" by Paul Brown, introducing elements of byzantine harmony to shape note singing. Join us for this unique performance of historic music—singers of all experience levels are welcome!
6p - AIKO SHIMADA JAZZ QUARTET
A performance of jazz singing, a form of jazz music where the human voice is used as an instrument in a band ensemble. Join us to listen to Aiko sing alongside a jazz quartet of horn, keys, drums and upright bass!
7p - MASTAH TEACHA
A performance from local rapper Masta Teacha joined by our jazz rhythm section and a surprise guest, including excerpts from his recent album.
8p - BYZANTINE CHANT
Closing out the evening, we will host a performance of traditional Byzantine Chant from Paul Brown, drawing on his experience as a cantor. Byzantine chanting is a living art almost 2,000 years old, drawing from some of the earliest traditions of Mediterranean music.
We hope to see (and hear!) you at this FREE event in the Garden Room. No tickets are needed, only an RSVP for our choir - donations are appreciated.
