Groundbird and Honoured Guests play songs about ghosts, gunge and graves deep underground in the Victoria Tunnel.Groundbird is the songwriting project of Richard T. O’Brien (a 2017 winner of the Eric Gregory Award for poetry). Fresh off recording sessions for new album Blue Light, Richard will be joined by Sam Covill (guitar/synth) and Niles Krieger (fiddle) to showcase a selection of material which takes a dry look at the darker side of life, from paranormal investigations to 17th century public executions. In the vein of Bill Callahan, Daniel Johnston and Robyn Hitchcock, Groundbird's well-crafted songs explore the hinterlands between the mundane and the surreal. He organises the quarterly Songwriters in Conversation series at Baba Yaga's Loft, North Shields, platforming artists like Staithe and Milky Wimpshake, and has previously played at the Globe, The Cluny, and the Black Swan Folk Club. Nev Clay called his debut album Misery Chords ‘fantastic, original, cliché-free songwriting,’ while The Crack praised it as a 'lo-fi delight' whose 'arresting lyrics' offer 'plenty to enchant.' Prepare to be enchanted, entertained and unnerved by a seasonal set which will make Vincent Price look like Fisher-Price, or the other way around. Running the gamut from tender folk to scuzzy punk, this is a one-off curated performance for true fans of underground music.'
