Welcome to Friends' 77th season of fabulous chamber music concerts in Vancouver! The superb Gropius Quartet takes its name from Walter Gropius, the revolutionary and visionary architect. He helped invent the Bauhaus design style in the 1920s; and as Gropius did with design, this string quartet’s aim is to uncover music’s structure, and bring it alive through passionate interpretation. They bring this approach to the classic repertoire and to contemporary music.As described by the German Klassik-begeistert blog, “This quartet plays on four instruments, but with one soul.”
The General Anzeiger Bonn praised the ensemble for “superb technique, and the ability to hold the tension from the first measure to the last — throughout the concert”.
The Gropius Quartet will play music from 3 centuries:
- Joseph Haydn’s 18th Century Classical and humorous String Quartet in E-flat Major, Opus 33, No. 2 “Joke”, nicknamed for an obvious sonic joke in the last movement;
- Shostakovich’s 20th Century modern String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Opus 110, written in 1960 “in memory of victims of fascism and war”;
- Mendelssohn’s 19th Century Romantic-era String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Opus 80, written in memory of his beloved sister, Fanny, and his last piece of chamber music.
