"Company of Wolves" (1984) starts off the first installment in this month's Sunday matinee series on shapeshifting and female desire.
Neil Jordan's lush, dreamlike fairy tale — adapted from Angela Carter's short story — follows a teenage girl adrift in a forest of half-remembered warnings and half-understood desires. Told through nested dreams and stories-within-stories, it reimagines "Little Red Riding Hood" as something stranger and more knowing: a coming-of-age tale where the danger in the woods might not be what she's been told to fear. Angela Lansbury stars as the grandmother spinning cautionary tales of wolves — a wonderfully sly turn from an actress better known for her cozier roles. Gorgeously shot, unsettling, and shot through with dark wit, The "Company of Wolves" asks what really happens when a girl stops being afraid of the wolf.
