About Jonja (2023)
A summer coming-of-age story. Thirteen-year-olds Jonja and Paul are friends and spend their summer days riding their bikes and playing “what if” games. Without telling her mother, Jonia embarks on vacation with Paul’s family. She relishes the time away from her family routine, until her lie is eventually exposed, and Paul questions their friendship. Director Anika Mätzke uses the backdrop of breezy days on summer vacation to tell her story about friendship and trust, different family backgrounds and first crushes while precisely capturing the inner world of adolescents, subtly addressing issues related to class and sexual orientation. Film is in German, with English subtitles
