MUSIC CLEVELAND! presents Gretchen Pleuss!
Music Cleveland! is pleased to welcome back home singer/songwriter/poet GRETCHEN PLEUSS with a special concert on the intimate Bop Stop stage on Wednesday, February 8th from 7 to 9 p.m.
å
Gretchen will appear as part of the Lift Their Voices concert series presented by the Roots of American Music and the Bop Stop.
She will be performing many of her originals and speaking about Indigenous Canadian-American singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Maria.
Gretchen Pleuss is a midwestern songwriter whose "vocal delivery and skillful finger picking call to mind the folk singers who graced the stage of the Gaslight Café during the 60's Greenwich Village folk renaissance.
Fans of Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and other folk luminaries will appreciate Gretchen's gorgeous arrangements and thought-provoking songwriting" - Dan Jarvis, Midwest Action.
Hailing from a lower middle-class upbringing along the Ohio River and Rustbelt, Gretchen’s lyrics weave her personal experiences into larger reflections of society and self. Though her messages are equal parts emotional and heady, Gretchen’s soft vocals and infectious melodies allow listeners to resonate even when they may not personally relate.
To date, Gretchen has played at an array of prominent venues throughout the United States, Canada, the UK, and Ireland and opened for acts such as Lisa Loeb, Loudon Wainwright III, Chely Wright, Damien Jurado, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), and Bill Payne (Little Feat, the Doobie Brothers). Her discography consists of three L.P.'s, including the much anticipated Daughter of the Broader Skies, which was produced by Jim Wirt and released on Sun Pedal Recordings in 2019.
Gretchen is currently a Master of Public Administration honors student at the University of Michigan-Flint.

“Lift Their Voices” is a community program to expand awareness of the artistic and societal innovations made by historical figures from marginalized communities whose contributions are too often under-appreciated. This monthly Roots of American Music concert series gives a voice to those marginalized people who did not have a voice.

GRETCHEN PLEUSS - https://www.gretchenpleuss.com/about
VIDEO - “If You Saw Me Now” -

“As with some of her proudly state musical heroes, which include Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and Ani Difranco, Pleuss keeps the music above the standard, three-chord, coffee-house troubadour sound with some cool chord progressions (a la Mitchell) and grooves underneath layered vocal harmonies. Pleuss also trusts her lilting melodies enough to use her quiet, emotive alto to sell her lyrics.” - Malcolm X Abram — The Akron Beacon Journal

UNFETTERED - November 14, 2022

My dog doesn’t like jazz

He paints his disapproval
with exasperated sighs of
oil black and egg white

I love these quiet nights
spent with brass ballads

In my mind,
my feet are swinging
through the cosmos
as time goes by

I am a hopeless romantic,
hopelessly falling back into
my own arms
I always catch me
I light the right candles
and choose the right songs

I prefer my company
and the shadow
of a dream where
my dualistic dog
takes off running toward the pines
whenever he hears the sound of trumpets
Someday,
I will shuffle around a hardwood floor
that I sanded myself
and remember all of the times
I denied myself a dance
because a man wouldn’t join me
Someday,
I’m going to smoke
every cigarette I once craved
and light my own house on fire
with the feelings I smothered
for someone else’s comfort

Imagine,
Billie’s voice leaking
through wooded windows
and the silhouette of
my naked, elderly body

Finally as unfettered
and unusual
as my naked spirit

MUSIC CLEVELAND!
This Facebook group is essentially a promotional page for our artist friends and music lovers around the globe. The pandemic forced us to close our meetup.com home group since live events and gatherings were suspended in 2020. For the duration, we were all about live streaming and personal posts and music from our artist friends!
Now, thanks to the vaccine, the country is opening up. We are especially excited to present live music in outdoor and curated indoor venues. We will always pay close attention to the current health advisories and vaccine protocols.
We also use this group for sharing videos and announcements for upcoming concerts that we will schedule and attend as a group. Now that a vaccine is readily available for the virus, we are pleased to resume our group activities.
Posts and videos from our friends around the world in the music industry are welcome.
