Rebetiko is the ‘Greek Blues’ brought to the mainland by refugees of Asia Minor in the late 1800s. While initially rejected by mainstream Greek society, eventually became deeply embedded in all popular music and culture. In this workshop, we will review the three genres that comprise rebetiko: tsifteteli (“double stringed” Greek belly dance), Zebeikiko (the man’s “eagles dance”), and Chasapiko (“the butcher’s” line dance). We will briefly acquaint ourselves with the history and social context of each style, and then learn a combination of each to naturally string them together and even use them as a source of inspiration for our own personalization and improvisation. After this workshop, you will be more than ready for your next Greek party or trip to the Agean! Pame! (let’s go)!
