Great Works of Literature - The Seagull, by Anton Chekhov
About this Event
November selection: The Seagull, by Anton Chekhov
Set on a country estate in late-19th-century Russia, The Seagull is a quietly devastating comedy-drama about unrequited love, artistic ambition, and the longing to be seen and understood. A young playwright struggles to find his voice while his mother, a celebrated actress, pursues her own fading glory; meanwhile, a young aspiring actress dreams of fame and falls for a successful writer who may never love her as she hopes. As their desires collide, Chekhov reveals the gap between the lives we imagine and the lives we actually lead. Funny, melancholy, and startlingly modern, the play invites us to reflect on creativity, aging, relationships, and the human tendency to seek happiness just beyond our reach.
