About this Event
GREAT STORMS ALONG OUR JERSEY SHORE
WITH EDUCATOR AND CONSERVATIONIST, DAVE GRANT.
Referring to coastal storm protection efforts, oceanographers like to muse “The ocean always bats last.”
In the 1800’s, local fishermen of Sea Bright warned builders to respect the protective sand dunes that once blocked the view of new homes along the beach. And old-timers on Staten Island used to caution newcomers: “Don’t build East of Hylan Boulevard” (The longest street on the island.)
Join us to revisit some legendary storms of our coast, how they form, and their impacts on wayswe prepare for the next “BIG ONE” and what we can expect in the future.
Our program leader Dave has presented teacher-training materials in every coastal state and overseas. He is currently the Conservation Director at the Shark Research Institute in Princeton, NJ, and is the former Director of the Brookdale College Ocean Institute at Sandy Hook. When not teaching or researching, Dave spends his summer breaks working as crew, lecturer, and scientist-in-residence on NOAA expedition vessels and on winter breaks on expedition cruises in Antarctica.
