About this Event

Celebrate World Fish Migration Day with free rod-and-reel fishing clinics at the Penn Pier, and seining to survey fish at the Penn Water Access Area! All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • 10am to 12pm: Fishing Frenzy at Penn Pier (O.5 miles from the Penn parking lot)

No experience necessary. Join us on Penn Pier to learn the ins and outs of (catch & release) fishing in Jamaica Bay! Participants will also learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, angling ethics, and aquatic ecology.

Each session is limited to 15 fishing rods; families/small groups are encouraged to share a rod. ! All supplies, including rods and bait, will be provided. Meet at the Penn Pier, which is a 15-20 minute walk along Hendrix Creek from the Penn parking lot.

Session times: 10:00am to 11:00am | 11:00am to 12:00pm |

NOTE: Free sport fishing clinics waive the requirement of participants to possess a fishing license or enroll in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry (during program hours only).

  • 1pm to 2:30pm: Seining at the Penn Water Access Area

We will use a large net to catch and count fish from Fresh Creek, as a way to survey the underwater life of Jamaica Bay.

Meet at the Penn Water Access Area. Please wear comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting wet and/or muddy, and bring sufficient water and sun protection. Note: The Penn Water Access Area is roughly a 6 -10 minute walk from the parking lot along a flat, gravel trail.
