Great Books: Middlemarch, Part I
George Eliot’s Middlemarch is have a bit of a moment lately. Her great novel is a “study in provincial life,” about how relationships work (or don’t), how a great web of sympathy ties all our lives together, and how “the growing good of the world” depends on unhistoric hidden lives.
If you’ve read some Jane Austen but wanted a bit more philosophy woven in with your wit, George Eliot has you covered. She translated formidable German philosophers such as Feuerbach and Spinoza, and brings her acute attention and these great ideas into this book.
In this first discussion, we’ll just crack the spine and talk about our first impressions, before wrapping up the near the end of August. Don’t worry about any particular midpoint in the story—just get started and we’ll get this ball rolling.
See you soon!
