Great Books: Middlemarch, Finale
Note: Due to vacation travels, this will be the Fourth Monday instead of our normal Third Monday. Enjoy an extra week to read Eliot on the beach!
George Eliot’s Middlemarch is have a bit of a moment lately. Her great novel is a “study in provincial life,” about how relationships work (or don’t), how a great web of sympathy ties all our lives together, and how “the growing good of the world” depends on unhistoric hidden lives.
If you’ve read some Jane Austen but wanted a bit more philosophy woven in with your wit, George Eliot has you covered. She translated formidable German philosophers such as Feuerbach and Spinoza, and brings her acute attention and these great ideas into this book.
In this final discussion, we’ll pick up wherever you left off in the middle of this march and talk about how the novel ends.
See you soon!
