We invite graphic designers to explore AI’s “replacement” of designers and the patriarchal and capitalist way the design industry functions
About this Event

Please note: this event will be held in person at Glasgow Zine Library. It is open to people who identify as graphic designers or have engaged with graphic design industry.

In this workshop, we invite graphic designers to explore how AI’s “replacement” of designers reflects both a patriarchal and capitalist way the design industry functions.

Participants in this workshop will consider: How feminist thinking might lead us toward a resilient future? Can we change our design processes to become less scalable and machine-readable? What are some of the examples of these? Participants will use a discussion of AI as an anchor to explore how the design industry could change.

The workshop will mix presentation with casual discussion and several short activities.

After the workshop, you are invited to submit a separate piece of creative output, which will be included in a collective zine and exhibited at SaltSpace Gallery in August.

This workshop is a part of a Master's thesis project led by Beth Xia from Edinburgh University. We’re looking for graphic designers to participate, and you are welcome to join one or more workshops (There is some overlap between workshops).

Any questions, please contact Beth at [email protected] for more information.

CW: AI, patriarchy, capitalism

About the facilitator:

Beth Xia is a designer, artist, and zine-maker. She worked as a full-time graphic designer for 7 years in Aotearoa New Zealand, after graduating from Falmouth University with a Graphic Design degree. She is currently studying the MSc Narrative Futures: Art, Data and Society at Edinburgh University, and wants to explore how we can practice graphic design to support the creation of a more just world.
