Learn the Art of Pruning this Spring with Lake Michigan College!
Discover the essential skills of grapevine pruning with our hands-on workshop designed for growers, wine enthusiasts, and anyone looking to deepen their knowledge of vineyard care. Whether you're new to pruning or looking to refine your techniques, this workshop offers expert guidance in a friendly and approachable environment. Taught by Mike de Schaaf - MSU Extension Farm Manager and LMC Viticulture Adjunct Faculty - who will be bringing over 30 years of wine and viticulture experience to this workshop!
What You’ll Learn
Foundations of Pruning: Understand why pruning is essential for vine health and fruit quality.
Training Systems: Explore the most common grapevine training methods used in hybrid, juice, and vinifera grape production.
Practical Techniques: Receive hands-on instruction on spur and cane pruning, and learn how to identify and avoid common mistakes.
Vine Assessment: Learn how to evaluate vine health, winter damage, and adjust pruning strategies accordingly.

This class runs concurrently with LMC's Wine and Viticulture Technology "Grapevine Pruning" course on Thursday afternoons from 2:30pm-4:50pm on March 20, March 27, and April 3. Class meets at MSU Extension's SWMREC.
