About this Event

The Grand Opening takes place during the weekend of Marcus Garvey's 139th birthday. Uhuru will be raising the red, black and green African flag initiated by Marcus Garvey, in honor of the international African leader whose vision of Black economic self-reliance and institution-building continues to inspire generations.

Guests will enjoy food, presentations, live music, spoken word, drumming, souventirs and other cultural activities including a community history exhibit highlighting the rich legacy of the West Florissant corridor as a center of Black business, culture and entrepreneurship.

In the spirit of Garvey, the opening marks a major achievement of the Black Power Blueprint, a community-driven initiative transforming North St. Louis through economic development, housing, food sovereignty and African self-determination.

The Grand Opening will feature keynote presentations from:

• African People's Socialist Party Chairman Omali Yeshitela• Black Power Blueprint Architect,  Ona Zené Yeshitela• Poet Makeda Baraka and many more cultural workers• Community leaders, artists and organizers

The celebration will recognize the volunteers, donors, contractors, pie buyers, neighbors and supporters whose contributions helped bring Uhuru Bakery & Café to life.
