Lisa Gutkin's Porch Band: A World Music Jam Band Born on a Street in Brooklyn

Will Holshouser (accordion), Jessica Lurie (Saxophones, flute), and Michael Sarin (drums) join Lisa Gutkin (violin, tenor guitar, voice) for a whimsical and groovy wander through a vast musical landscape. Gathering earlier in the pandemic to play on streets, porches, and playgrounds in Brooklyn, they are thrilled to return now with the nice weather.

Lisa Gutkin Grammy Award-winning violinist, singer, actor, and composer Lisa Gutkin is best known as a member of the acclaimed Klezmatics, and most recently for her musical score, performance, and music direction in the two time Tony award-winner, Indecent.

Lisa has had a storied career that reflects the eclectic nature of her life, passion, and creativity. A cameo performance in Sex and the City, a seat in Sting’s Broadway band for The Last Ship, a CD of original songs produced by John Lissauer, and scores for two of Pearl Gluck’s films have taken her a long way from her beginnings as back up musician to the Fast Folk songwriters’ collective.

Praised for her “hauntingly emotional” vocals by the L.A. Times, she has co-authored songs with Anne Sexton, Maggie Dubris, and Woody Guthrie. “Gonna Get Through This World”, co-written with Woody Guthrie, was described by Pete Seeger as “a piece of genius”.

In her ventures as soloist and bandleader, Lisa might swing seamlessly from Klezmer to the blues, or between traditional Irish and Appalachian sounds. She might even put the violin down altogether, pick up a tenor guitar, and sing one of her own universally resonant songs. Wherever she goes, Lisa has an uncanny way of taking the audience with her.

Lisa is a MacDowell and Norton Stevens Fellow plays one of the earliest Samuel Zygmuntowicz violins with one of the earliest Michael Yeats bows, carries her instrument in an Elipe case by Artonus, and uses an LR Baggs pick up system.

Will Holshouser's music draws on an eclectic range of sounds from various folk music styles, jazz, hymns, classical and experimental music. His most recent recording is a duo project with Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans. He has made three albums for the Portuguese label Clean Feed, and one with Musette Explosion, a collaborative trio featuring guitarist Matt Munisteri and tuba-ist Marcus Rojas. Will has also composed music for theater, film, and dance, and has toured extensively with Regina Carter, David Krakauer, Han Bennink & Michael Moore, and Kiran Ahluwalia. Locally, he has worked with Andy Statman, Suzanne Vega, Guy Klucevsek, Mark Morris Dance, New York City Ballet, and on Broadway.

Jessica Lurie’s distinct voice was formed from the richly diverse and eclectic Seattle and NYC music scenes. As a leader, side-person, composer and collaborator, Jessica is a regular fixture on jazz, new music, experimental jazz, funk and folk scenes, touring extensively in the US and Europe, performing on saxophones, flute, voice and the occasional accordion and ukulele. Recent highlights include recognition in the 2016/2017 Downbeat’s “Rising Star for Alto Sax” poll, and the celebrated release of her Jessica Lurie Ensemble: Long Haul (2018, Chant Records). Current bands include the Jessica Lurie Ensemble, the Tiptons Sax Quartet & Drums, Living Daylights trio, Sephardic music group Sofie Salonika, Slingshot, Ethiopian-inspired jazz Freethiopiques and TEPHRA led by cellist Helen Gillet. www.jessicalurie.com

Over the last thirty years, drummer Michael Sarin has been at the center of New York City’s genre-bending jazz and improvisational music community. His versatility and musical wit helped forge long associations with forward-looking artists Ben Allison, Thomas Chapin, Dave Douglas, Mark Dresser, Marty Ehrlich, Erik Friedlander, David Krakauer, Myra Melford, and Mario Pavone. His unique style and approach to the drum set has been highly sought after by musicians looking to expand the definitions of jazz and improvised music, and can be heard on over 200 recordings. Michael performs all over the world--in major and minor festivals; concert halls famous and infamous, big and small.
