Join us to learn about grafting, the ancient art of cloning trees. You can preserve heritage trees or you can clone your favorite tree, from just one, 2"-long branch.
The morning class time will be about the history, science and magic of grafting. After lunch (bring a bag lunch) we will graft trees.
Each student will have the opportunity to take home at least one apple and one pear tree that they have grafted in the afternoon class.
Bring your own grafting knife. Don't have one? Please ask ahead of time so you can get an appropriate tool. It does not have to be something expensive...please do not go out and buy an expensive grafting knife...they are like golf clubs and are available in a HUGE price range. Beginners do not need the elite model knife! :-)
The base tree, the rootstock, will be provided, two (2) per paid student.
Free scions (a small branch from the tree you wish to propagate) will be provided, or you may bring your own apple or pear scions. Check out the Spring Meeting Event on this page to see that FREE scions will be available at the Spring Meeting. If you plan to bring your own scions, please ask about how and when to harvest them and how to store them.
Grafting tape and rubber bands will be provided.
No prior grafting knowledge required.
Anyone under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.
Pre-registration is required. $20 fee to graft. Class size is limited so please sign up early: contact Dennis Strahle.
