Gradual Isolation started in the early 1990s as the musical project of two friends, Luc Van Den Bosch and Filip Van Breda, both living in the vicinity of Turnhout, Belgium. They were inspired by EBM and new wave from the ’80s and ’90s, drawing influence from bands such as Canadian Psyche.
With a few synthesizers, a drum machine, and a homemade microphone, they developed a sound that is both emotional and intimate—rooted in the spirit of bedroom-produced new wave. If the term emo-wave doesn’t exist yet, it should be introduced to describe Gradual Isolation’s music.
Over the years, they produced a large number of recordings, filling numerous tapes with improvisations and shaping between 20 and 30 finished tracks. Their music remained largely private at the time, shared through a limited number of handmade cassette releases. They performed live once, at the local new wave bar “The Cave” in Turnhout in 1991, while continuing to develop their work beyond the stage.
The duo has remained active ever since. Following the appearance of “The Sky Converts” and “Agony By Men” on Underground Wave Volume 7, the long-hidden archive now surfaces for the first time with the full-length LP Remaining Faces, released on Walhalla Records.
