A quintet with some very deep roots in New Orleans features a dazzling lineup of all-stars.
Multi talented arranger and vocalist, Gracie Jay has performed, written, and recorded with artists including Cyrille Aimee, Camille Thurman, Jamison Ross and more. Her compositions and arrangements have been performed by groups including Grammy award winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Part of a rare, niche category of talented female vocalists, Gracie is a powerful force on stage, simultaneously writing and arranging for the same large-ensembles she masterfully sings for.
Hired for her diverse artistic contributions, Gracie is known for elevating every group she’s invited to. Performances with these groups include Tuscon Jazz Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival, DC Jazz Festival, French Quarter Festival, the John F. Kennedy Center, Snug Harbor, The Century Room, and more. In 2025, Gracie made it into the quarterfinals of the American Traditions Competition.
Gracie received her Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance and Professional Music from Berklee College of Music. She received her Masters degree in Arranging and Composition from North Carolina Central University under the tutelage of Joey Calderazzo and Branford Marsalis.
Jason Marsalis seemed destined for a life in music. Raised in New Orleans within one of jazz’s most celebrated families, he grew up under the guidance of his father, Ellis Marsalis, the revered pianist, educator, and patriarch of the Marsalis musical dynasty.
At age three, Marsalis' parents gave him a toy drum set, introducing him with playful enthusiasm: “Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the fabulous Jason!” By six, he was studying drums with legendary James Black, and a year later, he was already sitting in occasionally with his father’s band.
By 2000, Marsalis was touring with Marcus Roberts while simultaneously developing his voice on the vibraphone through performances around New Orleans. As both a performer and composer, Marsalis demonstrates remarkable sensitivity, nuance, and imagination. His playing goes beyond technical precision or rhythmic power; whether behind the drum set or at the vibraphone, he approaches music as an act of creation, shaping each performance with depth, texture, and emotional insight.
The ensemble includes: Jason Marsalis (drums); Gracie Jay (vocals), James "Saxsmo" Gates (sax), Ryan Hanseler (piano), and Will Ledbetter (bass).
