About the Lecture:

CHRIS MURRAY is a writer, curator, and founder of Govinda Gallery in Washington, DC. He has edited/co-authored 25 books, including George Harrison Be Here Now: Photographs by Barry Feinstein with Chris Murray (Rizzoli 2020), Bruce Springsteen: From Asbury Park, to Born to Run, to Born in the USA, by David Gahr and Chris Murray (Rizzoli 2018). Murray has organized more than 250 exhibitions in museums and galleries of many of the leading artists and music photographers of our time. This event will be featuring photos by Frank Stefanko and David Gahr of Bruce Springsteen.

FRANK STEFANKO’s work includes classic images of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith, as well as other musical artists from the 1960s and 1970s, including the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Stefanko’s photographs have been used on the covers of Bruce Springsteen’s albums Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River, as well as Southside Johnny’s Hearts of Stone. Stefanko is the author of Days of Hope and Dreams: An Intimate Portrait of Bruce Springsteen, published by Billboard Books/Insight Editions (2003). He is also the author of Patti Smith: American Artist, published by Insight Editions (2006). Stefanko’s photographs have been exhibited at Govinda Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Frederick Weisman Museum in Minneapolis, the Cranbrook Museum in Birmingham, Michigan, the Experience Music Project in Seattle, and the Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey. Living in New Jersey, Stefanko continues to work on a number of projects, including landscape photography, portraits and street scenes of New York City. "Photography has been the one constant in my ever-changing life," he says.

DAVID GAHR (1922-2008) was one of music’s most under-the-radar photographers. Gahr started in 1958 when Moses Asch of Folkaways Records brought his work to a larger audience, Gahr captured iconic images of some of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Miles Davis, to name only a few. He was tapped by Columbia Records designer John Berg to shoot cover art for Springsteen’s second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Gahr’s earliest photographs of the musician showcase a youthful Bruce Springsteen, not even aged twenty-three, in New Jersey, on the eve of a career breakthrough. Gahr befriended the rising star, and from 1973 to 1986, he photographed Springsteen countless times both on and off stage. Rare captures include Springsteen recording music, performing at the famous West Village venue The Bottom Line weeks before the release of his seminal 1975 album Born to Run, and playing to legions of fans during his Born in the U.S.A tour.
