Continuing our exploration of Bach’s third cantata cycle (1725–28), we will explore two cantatas: Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild (BWV 79) and Es wartet alles auf dich (BWV 187).Written for Reformation Day in 1725, Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild prominently features the famous chorale “Now thank we all our God,” as well as the special use of two horns. Es wartet alles auf dich, which was first performed in 1726, uses a libretto from the town of Meiningen, where Bach’s cousin Johann Ludwig served as kapellmeister. Both cantatas were later reworked into short Lutheran-style masses Bach wrote in the late 1730s.
We ask for a donation at each session of $20 per person to cover a stipend for the music director and other expenses. But any amount is welcome, and no one is turned away.
