On the first Friday of the month talented classical musicians and dancers of all skill level come together for an evening of improvisational music and dance. In honor of Halloween and the spooky season we have curated an extra special gothic ballet. As requested at last months jam we will have a smoke machine. Costumes you can dance in are encouraged! I will be likely be wearing a tutu. Snacks are allowed in the studio if you want to bring them and place them on the altar to share 😊
Concert Flow:
The Jam starts at 7:30pm with an opening circle. In the open circle we will share our names and pronouns. We will then do a warm up that involves telling scary stories - trust me it will be fun!
Following the opening circle we will listen to haunting music from Andrew (organ), Caitlin (cello), Mathew (viola), Danielle (violin), and Moon (accordion). This will be our time to dance and explore movement. We will also have a small area of the room with soft pillows designated for observation and casual pillow fights.
We will end with a closing circle & harvest at 9:45pm. Harvest is a time to check in with how the jam went, decompress, and plan our next months jam!
After the live music we will have a spooky/sensual fusion dance playlist from 10pm until midnight for anyone who wants to keep dancing!
What is Contact Improv?
Contact improv is social movement practice involving the exploration and research of one’s body in relationship to the floor, space, and others through movement awareness, touch, and sharing weight. Let vibrations of the music resonate in whichever way feels right for you. This is an opportunity to step into vulnerability, express yourself, be seen and heard, connect with community, connect with yourself, and experience transcendent states of bliss & transformation.
Compensation:
The musicians who play at this event are talented working musicians. Music is how they support themselves and their families. While no one will be turned away for inability to pay, we strongly encourage a $10-25 cover to support our musicians. These can be made via cash at the door or to Venmo @melehana.
