Got To Get Out Tongariro Crossing or Mt Ruapehu Climb
Join us for Auckland Anniversary weekend of hiking or climbing!
About this Event

Have you #gottogetout for Auckland Anniversary weekend?

You have the choice to either:

1. Hike the Tongariro Crossing; OR

2. Climb to the Mt Ruapehu crater lake

Two different ticket options available, and note we need 10 to go! So book in now to signal that we can fill the bus :)

The Tongariro Crossing is SELF GUIDED (meaning you walk as a group from start to finish), with transport provided to both ends of the track. This is to keep your cost down.

The Ruapehu crater climb will be guided by local experts Adrift Tongariro and has a minimum of two to go ahead.

We will leave Saturday morning, hike on Sunday, and return back to Auckland Monday. Those who have come from 'outside of Auckland' may wish to leave Sunday night, but this is at no price difference because we have booked the whole hut.

Saturday: 29th Jan

9am - Meet up outside Archie Café, Ponsonby

915am - Departure in our bus

10am (ish) pick up people from Bombays and stop for coffee

(note can collect from other parts of the route such as Taupiri)

Approx. 3pm - Arrival National Park ski hut, settle in, shared cooking, relax

Sunday: 30th Jan

7am - whole group meets for 'gear and weather check' at Adrift Tongariro Base National Park. Anyone doing crater climb departs with expert guides. Rest of group goes in the bus to Mangetepopo trail start.

Hike or climb all day. Estimated 7 hour Tongariro Crossing

5:30pm - Back in the lodge, showers

7pm - Shared dinner (after debrief / circle of reflection etc)

those who have to get home on Sunday night, can depart.

Mon 31st:

8am - Wake up, breakfast and clean lodge completely, have a look around the area.

10am - Drive back to Auckland

Approx. 4pm - Arrival Auckland after a few stops along the way

This 19km trek is New Zealand’s best day one-day walk. The track leads up to the saddle between Mt. Ngauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro. The landscape on Tongariro is peppered with different coloured and shaped craters that have been active at different periods, scoured volcanic rocks, mountain springs and brightly coloured emerald lakes.

The Tongariro Crossing in winter offers the opportunity to walk through the magnificent snow-covered landscape without the summer crowds.

Full day Mt Ruapehu crater lake guided walk for those who like a manageable challenge. Mt. Ruapehu is the highest (2797m) of the three active andesitic volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park. The last eruption on Mt. Ruapehu was in 2007. Join us for lunch on top of the North Island highest volcano from where you can gaze down into the geothermal waters of Mt Ruapehu’s crater lake. Please note this is not a track and is less stable walking than on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The walk begins at the Whakapapa Ski area at the top of the Bruce Road on Mt. Ruapehu. There may be an option of taking a chairlift up to Knoll Ridge café. This option will depend on the group on the day and if the chairlifts are operating.

You will be staying two nights in bunk beds in an epic National Park lodge called 'East Coast Ski Club'. The lodge has a fully equipped kitchen and separate showers and toilets for men/women. The cost for accommodation is included in the ticket price.

You must bring:

- Lunch & snacks (note there's a shop in National Park but it's quite a walk from hut). Food for the Crossing, high energy snacks, something to share.

- Water (3L min for a summer crossing)

- Personal Medic*tion

- Walking poles (if desired)

- Sunscreen

- Sunglasses

- Backpack (need to carry water, food, clothes, etc.)

- Hiking boots (over the ankle with a sturdy sole are best. Trail runners 'ok')

- Waterproof raincoat (ski jackets are ok)

- Warm beanie

- Buff

- A change of clothes for after the hike

All of these clothing and footwear items are available to rent at the Adrift Base if required.

NOTE: If you are hiking Tongariro Crossing you will be starting from Adrift Base Saturday morning and can rent your gear then. If you are doing the Crater Climb you will have to pre-arrange rental by sending an email to [email protected] with what items you will require and what size.

For the lodge:

- Sleeping bag (mattresses are provided, so no need to bring a sleeping pad)

- Pillowcase

- Torch/headlamp

- Towel

- Food (2 x breakfast, lunch for the hike, 1 x dinner - potluck, snacks)

- Something to share with everyone!

We will do a potluck dinner on Saturday and maybe Sunday, or go to a bar

Although both adventures are classified as Intermediate-hard, no previous tramping experence is needed. A very good level of fitness is required though, and you should NOT be wearing brand new or borrowed boots that you are unfamiliar with!

We will walk at a moderate pace. Usually the Crossing takes 6-7 hours with a big group. The bus will be waiting at the other end.

Before arrival to the event please sign-in using our werewolf check-in: (Make sure whoever you list as your emergency contact, will have their phone on and be able to assist us in an emergency.)

Cancellations with at least 2 weeks notice will be 100% refunded. Cancellations with less then 2 weeks notice will not be refunded.

If you have questions or concerns about your fitness level, please contact [email protected]
