Released in 1968, this album introduced Malcolm “Mac” Rebennack’s alter-ego Dr. John the Night Tripper, weaving together swamp-blues grooves, New Orleans R&B traditions, psychedelic textures, chants, and ritualistic percussion into a shadowy, atmospheric journey unlike anything else of its era. From the eerie incantations of “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya” to the trance-like spell of “I Walk on Gilded Splinters,” Gris-Gris feels like a midnight ceremony: rich with creole mystique, murky rhythms, and a dreamlike blend of cultures and sounds that has only grown in stature over time. Though overlooked at its release, it’s since been hailed as a landmark recording — a classic that brought the heart and voodoo heart of New Orleans to a wider, psychedelic audience.
