Led by the GRAMMY-winning pianist, saxophonist, composer, and arranger Gordon Goodwin, the Big Phat Band is a virtuoso Los Angeles ensemble that makes its welcome return to SFJAZZ, accompanied by the eclectic Bay Area-based string group Quartet San Francisco. Goodwin is a masterful multi-instrumentalist whose résumé boasts an impressive list of major music figures including Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Tormé, Toni Braxton and Christina Aguilera. He won a 2006 GRAMMY for arranging the score for the Pixar animated hit The Incredibles and won three Emmy Awards for his work as a composer and arranger.
Started in 2000, the Big Phat Band has toured the world and recorded a series of dazzling records that reflect Goodwin’s influences – Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power – and highlight a well-oiled ensemble with star guest soloists like Arturo Sandoval, Eddie Daniels, Dianne Reeves, Patti Austin, and Chick Corea.
Led by violinist Jeremy Cohen, Quartet San Francisco transcends the traditional approach and repertoire of the standard string quartet to include tango, pop, jazz, swing, and funk. Their latest project, 2023’s Raymond Scott Reimagined, is a collaboration with the Big Phat Band dedicated to the innovative composer known to many for the use of his music in classic Warner Brothers cartoons of the 1940s and 50s.
