Gooseberry Jam has been a major force in the Greensboro rock scene for years. These guys have played here at Doodad Farm for fundraising shows many times, so we thought it was only fitting that we bring them in for a feature show. After a couple of cancellations due to weather and illness, we’re happy to have them in our lineup this year. Opening the show will be Michael “Blind-Dog” Gatewood, a dazzling blues man.GOOSEBERRY JAM is a roots based, original rock band from right here in the Triad of North Carolina. Originally formed in 2007, the band has gone through several iterations to arrive at the current lineup. Led by principal songwriter and vocalist/rhythm guitarist, Darrell Craig (a veteran of the Piedmont & Triad music scene), Gooseberry Jam is well-set into a solid foundation via Randy Wagoner on bass guitar, & Sean Cox on drums, both formerly of the band, Back Porch Circle, as well as other triad based projects. Carrying the role of lead guitar is Doyle Hinkle. One could simply say that Doyle is an absolutely smoking hot, lead guitarist, and that would be sufficient. However, it’s the knowledge & feel of when not to “rip it up”, and to let it breathe that makes all the difference. Rounding out the line up is Wes Muir on rhythm guitar. Wes is equally invested in the Triad music scene and brings balance and cohesion. The diverse backgrounds of the five members mold the music into a tasty offering that pulls forth the spirit & feel of singer/songwriter, mixed with old school rock & roll, & what one might call a southern fried taste of soul.
VENTILATOR was recorded at home base by the band themselves, and mixed by guitarist Doyle Hinkle. This process is considerably longer than a traditional studio, but allows more freedom and control. Benjy Johnson at Earthtones Recording Studio in Greensboro, NC mastered the final tracks. The album was written and composed in entirety by the current lineup, which gives a perfect representation of where Goosberry Jam's sound has evolved.
If we had a gate, it would open at 6:30 pm. Feel free to show up earlier than that, even, if you just want to enjoy the weather, have a picnic, or just hang out (though we may ask you to help set up!). The show will start at 7:00pm.
MICHAEL ”BLIND-DOG" GATEWOOD is a native of the Motor City and has been a music teacher, instrument technician and professional musician since the age of 16. He is an award-winning one-man act who has polished his chops in places as diverse as the Sierra Foothills, the Mojave Desert, Mississippi Delta and the streets of New Orleans. Some his many awards include:
- First Prize in the 2002 Telluride Acoustic Blues competition.
- 2004 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) Finalist
- Simi finalist in 2006 in the International Song Contest (ISC), Blues category
- First place in the 2015 River Basin Blues Society IBC Local
Truly a one-man band, "Blind-Dog" is now based out of Greensboro, NC.
Doodad Farm never charges for entry to concerts, though we do request that those who are able (and you know who you are) donate at the stage area. Every penny of donations goes straight to the performers. We think $10-$20 is a reasonable donation for this show. There will also be an opportunity to buy CDs and other merchandise, and that's an even better way to contribute.
Other details:
• Kids, dogs, and all your friends are always welcome. Doodad Farm is a safe place for everyone.
• Please bring CASH for your donation to the performers and for merch purchases.
• This is an outside, farm like setting (thus the name). Dress like you’re going camping and you’ll be fine.
• We never allow weapons of any sort at the farm. If you think you need to protect yourself, you’re in the wrong place.
• Bring your own beverages, and consume them responsibly. Of course snacks and picnics are welcome.
• If you’re a sitter, bring a chair. We have some extras if you forget.
• Smoking is permitted as long as you don’t bother anyone or do any butt-dropping.
• Please clean up after yourself and treat the Farm as if it’s your own (in a way, it is!).
• A portable toilet and drinking water will be available.
• Let someone help you park, especially if the field is wet.
