GOOLUGATUP SOUNDS returns for its Makuru '24 edition with two bright-minded composer/songmakers at the top of their game, creating dense sound-worlds inside Goolugatup's newly minted project + performance space.
~
1. Canberra-based composer, artist, songmaker and organizer Sia Ahmad has been a vital player in Australia's underground music scene for a decade or more. Keen curator of DIY events, prolific recording artist and erstwhile member of electronic jazz outfit Tangents, she's collaborated with the likes of Liars, Gwenno and the Australian Art Orchestra. Here, performing under solo-music moniker SHOEB AHMAD, Sia interlaces the sounds of familiar pop and rock instruments in idiosyncratic ways to create richly personal, indelible soundscapes.

“…the kind of understand, bedroom-spun vocal that slips down a treat – and a knack for delicately wrought, sampladelic soundscapes to compliment it” - FACT Magazine
“Delightful smoked-out pop music, distilled into a romantic, original vision” - Bleep.com

2. SOPHIA HANSEN-KNARHOI has her roots in composition and sound design for dance, theatre and multimedia - putting her skills as a cellist, singer and guitarist to good use against the moving image. With her debut EP 'Wildflowers' (out via Kentucky label Ba Da Bing), Sophia fosters an interplay between patient, lush atmospherics and pared-back pop, delving into themes of nature of womanhood. Elsewhere - as in a recent collaboration with Liam Downey for Audible Edge - she dives headfirst into pure sonic experiments, exploring extended techniques and "sustained and corrupted sound through electronics and cello." Currently, S. H-K is the Musician-in-Residence at Goolugatup Heathcote; the inaugural artist to take part in the Felix Burrows Music Residency Program, co-presented by WAM and Fremantle Foundation. Goolugatup Sounds #19 is her final show in Australia before she relocates to London, making it a precious set swirling in creative culminations and future possibilities.

"An instantly recognisable mood [...] one of vast spaces but at the same time intimately warming." - Record Turnover

Before, after and between, be swept up in the exuberant selections of dj WETPUDDLSS, aka past Goolugatup exhibiting artist Ailsa Waddell. The elastic, unpredictable, gently psychedelic qualities found in Waddell's visual art practice are echoed in their mixing style - but with a big extra splash of futuristic giddiness and playful whimsy.

PLUS - food from local providores, full bar and the opening of Oliver Hull's 'Confusion Matrix' and Rebecca McCauley and Aaron Claringbold's 'Here's what we know.'
