Tenebrae is one of the most ancient traditions of the Christian Church for the celebration of Holy Week. The term is Latin for darkness or shadow. As this “Service of Shadow” unfolds, candles symbolic of the light of Christ are extinguished one by one, until only one is left burning. That candle is then carried from the Sanctuary, leaving the worshipers in darkness, symbolic of Christ’s death and burial.
