Gong Bath
About this Event
The gong is one of the oldest percussion instruments in human history, with origins traced back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests gongs emerged in Southeast Asia and were used in temples, ceremonies, and spiritual practices. The instrument spread across cultures from Indonesia to China to India, each civilization developing its own relationship with the gong's sound and purpose.
In ancient traditions, the gong was far more than music. It was used to mark sacred time, to call communities to ceremony, and as a tool for meditation and healing. The instrument's ability to produce complex, layered frequencies made it uniquely suited to these spiritual functions. For centuries, gongs remained central to religious and meditative practices in temples and monasteries.
The modern gong bath is a contemporary adaptation of this ancient practice. It emerged in the 20th century as Western practitioners encountered gong traditions and began exploring sound meditation in new contexts. Today, gong baths exist at the intersection of traditional practice and contemporary wellness culture.
A gong bath session involves lying down while a trained player works with the instrument. The practice is rooted in the understanding that the gong's sustained tones can facilitate a meditative state. You come, you listen, and the gong does what it has done for millenni, it fills the space with sound.
The session lasts approximately one hour. Arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
