What if Gold Hoop earrings could be a portal to a new dimension?

Join us for the screening of the mixed-reality dance film, Gold Sphere
About this Event

Gold hoop earrings are a cultural and ancestral thread tying together “Blackness” globally. From the Sudan in Africa to local beauty stores, you can see Black and Brown people wearing gold hoop earrings. The hoop is a symbol of pride and connection. It is accessible. It is a cultural thread. What if gold hoop earrings could become a portal to an alternate universe created by Black Girls where they could study, research, and find connection through movement? – A universe where Black girls can discuss and escape the racial unrest in the United States of America.

Gold Sphere [is] a mixed-media-virtual reality video research project and interactive exhibit that uses motion capture technology, to create a universe where Black girls can connect with ancestry, spirituality, and dance.

The films screening will include post-film discussions with Professor Robertson and panelists, visual art, and a business expo highlighting the businesses of Black & Brown women-owned student businesses from Medgar Evers College. This event was made possible by the funding of The CUNY BRESI Initiative with support from The Andrew W Mellon foundation.
