About this Event
We start our walk on Russell Square – please note that the exact meeting place will be clearly described in words via email after purchase (please see more info in the FAQs below).
This architectural appreciation tour shows you how the retrospective term 'Art Deco' covers a wide-ranging styles built in the late 1920s and 30s, from brick-clad elegance and to Streamline Moderne façades with elegant, yet understated, decoration.
We will look at luxury apartment blocks with in-house facilities, nurses' homes and hospital buildings, as well as forward-thinking garages and service stations designed for the weathy few who could afford a motor car at that time. We will visit places of learning, innovation and commerce, and some charming 1930's pubs.
This route is not just about the buildings as it offers some marvellous examples of sculpture including low relief panels carved by one of Charles Holden's favourite artitsts, and two others by one of my own favourite sculptors. At another location we'll marvel at a mathematical magic square and wonder why it's there!
- 2hrs / 1.5 miles approx
- Ends near Theobalds Rd, ten mins' walk from Holborn/Chancery Lane station /

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com
