Part of Strathmore's James Baldwin Series (Strathmore.org/Baldwin) Howard University's Department of Theatre Arts students will perform select scenes from James Baldwin's dramatic works: "The Amen Corner" (1955) and "Blues for Mister Charlie" (1964). Directed by Dr. Khalid Y. Long, the presentation will also include a scholarly overview of Baldwin's contributions to African American Theatre. The Youth Poets of DIALECT of Prince George’s County celebrates the 100th birthday of one of America’s most influential voices with a series of events for youth poets—documentary screenings, book readings, and panel discussions, culminating in a live multimedia showcase with poetry, music, and visual art by the poets.

DR. KHALID Y. LONG is an Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at Howard University. Dr. Long's teaching and scholarship focuses on African American/Black Diasporic drama, theatre, and performance.
PATRICK WASHINGTON was forged in Washington DC’s vibrant arts community of the mid-'90s, finding his voice on DC’s famed U Street corridor alongside writers like Toni Blackman, Ta-Nehisi Coates & Jason Reynolds. Nationally, as part of the dynamic hip-hop poetry ensemble POEM-CEES, he’s been a regular performer on HBO’s Def Poetry and seen on the NFL Network. In 2009, he was asked by Tavis Smiley to serve as narrator for the centerpiece of his national African American museum exhibit, America I Am. His biggest honor by far was being commissioned to create a poem dedicated to the monument to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, which he performed at the unveiling on the National Mall on October 16, 2011. A teaching artist at heart, Patrick is founder of the arts education company, DIALECT of Prince George's County, and with it, created the county’s Youth Poet Laureate program, which gives young people the opportunity to collaborate with city officials and serve as poetic ambassadors for their community.
DIALECT OF PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY provides artists with the space for expression and the skills for growth as practitioners of the stage arts. We understand that for many, a simple opportunity is the much needed bridge that can lead to success, and so we provide not only basic training in these areas, but we also partner with additional County organizations in creating avenues that will assist in cultivating full-fledged careers in the arts for both youth and for young adults.
Strathmore extends its gratitude to AARP for supporting our two-month series of events celebrating the legacy of James Baldwin. STRATHMORE.ORG/BALDWIN
