About this Event
This September, join the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) and Raleigh, NC’s legendary A/V Geeks for a nostalgic and slightly bizarre trip down memory lane. Hosted by film archivist and A/V Geeks founder Skip Elsheimer, this one-night-only screening brings the best of vintage 16mm educational and instructional films straight to the big screen. It’s 16mm on the 16th—16mm film, September 16th, and 100% old school.
We're bringing these mid-century celluloid treasures back to their natural habitat: the cafetorium at the historic Baker Center, built in 1911 as the Baker School.
What’s on the Lesson Plan for 16mm on the 16th:
- A Handpicked 16mm Vault Lineup: Skip Elsheimer and TAMI have cracked open their vaults to curate rare 16mm films produced right here in the Lone Star State.
- Authentic School Vibe: Experience these films inside Baker Center's original school cafetorium. Literally old school.
- Real 16mm Projection: Experience the authentic sights and sounds of film projected live from 16mm.
- Complimentary Drinks & Snacks: Enjoy free beverages (wine provided by Austin Winery) and snacks (provided by Phil’s Icehouse and Amy’s Ice Creams) while you take in the show.
- Retro Pre-Show Vinyl DJ: Get into the vintage mood from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM with retro tracks spun live by Zeroplate while you settle in.
- Exclusive Archive Tours: Get a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the TAMI vaults before the screen lights up. Plus, you can try your hand at film splicing.
- The Analog Media "Garage Sale": Browse our stash of vintage AV oddities! Bring some extra cash (Venmo also accepted) to take home an empty film reel, vintage cans, decorative/parts-only cameras and projectors.
- The Ultimate Film-Geek Raffle: Enter to win a 16mm projector bundled with your very own 16mm print of one of the films featured in the show, plus gifts from the Alamo Drafthouse and A/V Geeks!
- Hands-On Letterpress Printing (Hall Pass Add-On Tier): Step into "The Press Room" before the screening to hand-print your own custom, commemorative letterpress poster on vintage wood type.
