The Venue:
This is a charming and varied garden surrounding this north Gloucestershire medieval manor *house (*not open) within sight of Tewkesbury Abbey. The Court was built around 1400 as an Abbatial palace where the Abbots of Tewkesbury could live and entertain at a suitable distance from the Abbey. It came into the ownership of the present family at the end of 18th Century. Extensive remodelling happened in the late 19th Century by the famous Arts and Crafts architect Philip Webb. The garden has developed over the last 500 years but most significantly over the past 150 years. Many of the estates roses are well established, others are newer and so a variety can be seen at the estate.
The Tutor:
Jonathan Bishop has been the Head Horticulturist at Forthampton Court for the last 5 years. He is a current RHS advisor and has appeared on BBC Gardeners World and Gardeners’ Question Time. Jonathan also runs his own company called Foliation through which he has exhibited at Chelsea Flower show winning Golds for the last 8 years.
The Workshop:
This is a one day Workshop for beginners up to the professional gardener. covering the principles of keeping and caring for roses successfully in your own garden or the gardens you work in.
The training will cover the soil condition needed for successful rose growing, what to consider when purchasing roses, the variety of roses available, how to plant a rose, deadhead, prune, tie in and train. How to identify pests and diseases and what to use to control these, and then finally feeding and watering.
The day will start with tea, coffee and biscuits while we discuss specific requests for the day. This will be followed by a tour around Forthampton to look at the different varieties of roses, the condition of them, and together we will identify what the roses need in terms of treatment or care.
