About the book: In this timely new book in Beacon’s successful ReVisioning History series, professor Gloria Browne-Marshall delves into the history of protest movements and rebellion in the United States. Beginning with Indigenous peoples’ resistance to European colonization and continuing through to today’s climate change demonstrations, Browne-Marshall sheds light on known and forgotten movements and their unsung leaders, revealing how protest has shaped our nation and remains a vital force for change today.
Drawing upon legal documents, archival material, memoir, government documents and secondary sources, "A Protest History of the United States" gives voice to those who pushed back against the mistreatment of others, themselves, and in some instances planet Earth. Browne-Marshall highlights stories of individuals from all walks of life, backgrounds, and time periods who helped bring strong attention to their causes. Regardless of whether their protests accomplished their end goals, Browne-Marshall reminds us that dissent is always meaningful and impactful. In fact, reading this book is an act of protest.
About the author: Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is an EMMY award-winning writer, an educator, a legal advocate, and a playwright. She is a professor of Constitutional Law and African Studies at John Jay College (CUNY), was a Resident Fellow at the Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School, as well as a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. She won the 2024 American Bar Association Silver Gavel Award. Her books include "She Took Justice: The Black Woman, Law, and Power," "The Voting Rights War," and "Race, Law, and American Society."
About the interlocutor: Rufus Williams is an accomplished, results-oriented financial strategist, entrepreneur, and talk show host with a long-standing commitment to civic engagement and education.
He is a principal with JayCo Strategies, currently working with Loop Capital's Real Estate Investment Group, where he focuses on acquiring and developing large-scale commercial and residential projects. Most recently, he served as Managing Director of Loop Capital Investment Management (Loop Wealth), the firm's personal wealth management division, dedicated to building generational wealth for ultra-high-income clients, including athletes, entertainers, artists, and executives.
Prior to his tenure at Loop Wealth, Rufus was the Founder, President, and CEO of Olympus LLC, a boutique client representation firm serving athletes and entertainers in contract negotiation, business management, and investment advisory services. He also served as Chief Financial Officer for Oprah Winfrey's HARPO Inc., and earlier in his career, as Corporate Audit Manager at Baxter Healthcare, following a decade at Arthur, Andersen & Co.
Rufus is the producer and host of The Rufus Williams Show, a live, daily, issue-oriented radio talk show on WVON 1690 AM in Chicago. He leads dynamic discussions and interviews with authors, public officials, intellectuals, and community leaders on topics ranging from politics, education, and health to public safety, business, and culture.
He also develops, produces, and hosts "His Story," a compelling interview series featuring accomplished men, and "Bound & Woven," a series of in-depth conversations with authors about their latest works - both featured on VONtv, WVON's digital network.
Rufus's philanthropic involvement is as extensive as his professional career. He served as President of the Chicago Board of Education, leading the nation's third-largest school system, and has been a consistent presence on the boards of several Chicago schools and civic organizations. He is a Life Trustee of Francis W. Parker School, former Vice Chairman and Treasurer of Providence St. Mel School, and former President of the Local School Council at Whitney Young Magnet High School.
He also has a long and deep connection with BBF Family Services (Better Boys Foundation), where he most recently served as President and CEO, and currently serves on the Board of Governors of the City Club of Chicago. A passionate reader and sports enthusiast, Rufus particularly enjoys history, basketball, and golf. He is married and the proud father of two children and three grandchildren.
