Visthapana traces the history of the Satpura voluntary relocation model, recognised as one of the most successful examples of forest-village relocation in India.

Through slow, thoughtful conversations with erstwhile forest communities and the officials who were involved in the relocation project, the film explores the opportunities, challenges, successes and risks associated with large-scale voluntary relocation.

The film looks beyond the relocation process itself to ask important questions about its impact on forests, wildlife, landscapes and the people who have historically lived alongside them.

At its heart, Visthapana offers a nuanced reflection on conservation, human displacement and the complex relationship between communities and protected landscapes.
