About this Event
The global unplugged movement is gaining momentum and, this year, Portland is set to participate.
The Global Day of Unplugging begins at sundown on Friday, March 7 & ends at sundown on March 8.
Portland is kicking off this incredible 24 hours with a fun/rest/creative party at Guilder Coffee, housed at Powell's City of Books Burnside location. Guilder and dr. doreen dodgen-magee* are hosting.
Bring your own non screen based project or partake in one (or more) of the fun creative offerings we'll have on hand.
If you'd like to be unplugged in (relative) silence, come between 5 and 6. Feel free to stay into the communal time and still be solo if you want.
If you'd like to be unplugged with options for connection and interaction, come between 6 and 8.
Guilder's incredible food and drink menu will be available for purchase.
This event intended to help you:
Take a break from the noise and return to your self and eachother.
Regulate your central nervous system by being away from screens and the content they deliver.
Explore embodied activities (including restful ones) that are as fun, if not more, than anything you can do with your phone.
Gain skills that will enable you to live through awkward social moments and tolerate boredom (both super powers in today’s world).
Connect more deeply and meaningfully with yourself and, if you choose, others.
What to expect at this event:
A warm, hospitable space that embraces you as your full self, just as you are. If you’re a headphones person, you’re welcome to wear them. If you’re socially awkward, you’re celebrated here. This event is for real people having an in-the-moment time alongside each other.
Ample opportunities to rest, play, or create either with objects/projects you bring or with all the fun offerings we’ll have on hand (e.g: legos, brain flakes, creative supplies, games, puzzles, etc)
Time totally by yourself in the presence of others or, if you prefer, opportunities to engage with other participants.
Schedule (to be updated as new information arises):
5:00-6:00 Unplug alone together. Settle into time offline on your own among others. Read, interact with all the fun things we'll have available, work on your own project, or do nothing but stare into space.
6:00-8:00 Unplug together. Join others to build with legos, play a game, or do a puzzle. Converse (or not). Live through socially awkward moments and feel happier as a result.
*Psychologist and author doreen dodgen-magee (Deviced! Balancing Life & Technology in a Digital World & Restart: Designing a Healthy Post Pandemic Life) has spent a good potion of the last 20 years helping folks put their phones down in order to have fiery, emobodied experiences. She's been featured in the Washington Post, New York Times, Psychology Today and has been a guest on Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, Nightline, & Amanpour & Co.
