Glaze Development Workshop
Go beyond the recipe. Learn to develop your own glazes.
Ever wondered why a glaze works — or why it suddenly doesn’t?
Join Gary Hambleton & Japneet Keith for an immersive 5-day Glaze Development Workshop at Old Stables Pottery & Gallery, Mullalyup, where we take you beyond following recipes and into the fascinating world of glaze development.
This is a hands-on workshop designed to help you understand what is actually happening inside a glaze — and give you the confidence to start developing and adapting your own.
Over five days, we’ll explore:
• Glaze formulation and understanding recipes
• Oxidation and reduction firing
• Mineral substitution and additions
• How individual minerals influence colour, surface and behaviour
• Testing, adjusting and comparing glaze results
• Practical glaze experiments and test tiles
• Learning to read results and make informed changes
One of the most exciting parts of the workshop is the mineral substitution and addition experiments. Rather than simply telling you what a mineral does, we explore it practically and visually — allowing you to see the changes happen in your own tests.
And because we’re working as a group, you’ll see far more possibilities than you would normally be able to explore on your own. Different tests, different adjustments and different results become one big shared learning experience.
We believe glaze development is best learnt slowly, thoughtfully and through experimentation.
You’ll leave not just with glazes, but with a better understanding of how to develop, troubleshoot and create your own glaze palette.
Old Stables Pottery & Gallery, Mullalyup
2–6 October 2026
 9am–4:30pm daily
 $950 per person
Places are limited.
If you’ve been wanting to take the next step from using glazes to actually understanding and developing them, this workshop is for you.
Come spend five days in the studio, get your hands dirty, experiment, ask questions — and start seeing glazes differently.
