Glasgow Against Closures is inviting you to join us for a gathering at the Deep End on January 14. The day will bring together speakers and attendees from our Summit on Ownership and Democracy in November 2022 in a relaxed environment, to digest the contents of the day and brainstorm what it might mean for the next steps of the campaign for the year ahead. We want to take the time to celebrate the victories we saw in 2022, prepare ourselves for the challenges we face in 2023, and explore how we can foster better connectivity and solidarity between the Glasgow Against Closures family and other networks and communities in the city.
We hope that all our Summit attendees will be able to join us, but this event is also open to anyone who wasn’t able to make the Summit, but wants to learn more about Glasgow Against Closures or be involved in the next stages of the campaign!
More information about the breakdown and activities of the day is coming soon!
On November 26 we hosted Glasgow Belongs To Us, bringing together campaigners from across the Glasgow Against Closures family to lead us in this Summit on Ownership and Democracy. The day opened with a plenary session from key GAC activists, and continued with 4 sessions from organisations within the GAC network, designed to highlight and explore key issues and lessons GAC has been navigating over the past 18 months. Glasgow’s Bread and Roses was a lecture on Glasgow’s cultural history, given by the Friends of the People’s Palace. Glasgow Entrusted was a panel and Q+A about community ownership and asset transfers with the Govanhill Baths Community Trust. Glasgow Fights Back was a discussion on cuts to services and funding in the city, led by members of Unison Glasgow City Branch. Glasgow (Re)Governed was a workshop on local and alternative democracy in Glasgow, facilitated by the People’s Plan for Glasgow. The day ended with a call to action from STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer.
The day was a positive opportunity for us to share our journey and the lessons learned with the public and other campaigns - the current climate of concealed strategies and cuts can foster fierce competition between grassroots groups for resources and funding, so transparency and sharing of information as a means of building better solidarity between these different groups has been a key value of the Glasgow Against Closures campaign from the outset. That said, it was also a positive experience to share information amongst ourselves! Reflecting on the day, we realised that amidst the 18 months of goal oriented campaigning, this was also the first chance GAC had given ourselves to take time to sit and explore some of these overarching issues in more depth. It was a valuable opportunity for us to pause and take stock of all we’ve learned, and how we might apply it moving forwards.
These kinds of opportunities for in-depth discussion and exploration, both publicly and among ourselves, will feature far more in our activities in 2023. We hope that January’s event will allow us to gather feedback and fresh ideas from attendees to help us guide and shape those activities.
