Gladesville Asylum ,Bedlam Bay, Banjo Paterson Cottage Ghost /History Tour

The Gladesville Lunatic Asylum or Mental Hospital, was a psychiatric hospital established in 1838 in Gladesville, Sydney, New South Wales in Australia. The hospital officially closed in 1993, with the last inpatient services ceasing in 1997. The purpose-built asylum was constructed on the banks of the Parramatta River, in the area now known as Gladesville. 1,200 patients at least are buried in a mass grave inside this haunted Mental Hospital at Gladesville. The original sandstone complex, known initially as Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum contains many many ghosts which I will tell you about on the tour. is a nineteenth century sandstone cottage clinging to the edge of a rocky elevation above Looking Glass Bay and the Parramatta River near Bedlam Point at Gladesville. It is a single storey building with a large attic and two additional wings, and is built in a style which architectural historians refer to as 'Victorian Georgian'. Bedlam Point / Bedlam Bay was named after the mental hospital built near it, based on the the English name for asylum Bethlehem, corrupted to Bethlem, then Bedlam. Rising up from the bay are the grounds of what was once the Gladesville Psychiatric Hospital. Aboriginal people lived for thousands of years in what we call now the City of Ryde. When the first Europeans settled at Sydney Cove in 1788 the traditional owners of this area were the Wallumedegal. Banjo Paterson's cottage is located within Banjo Paterson Park, one of Sydney Harbour's foreshore parks. It has a frontage to Punt Road which comes to an end a little below Rockend, with a scrambling track leading down to the sandstone remains of an old wharf at Bedlam Point. I run the ghost tour here on a regular basis and hold a tour from 1 - 50 people. Please meet in front of Banjo Paterson's Cottage.
