Free glacier travel workshop for learning life saving skills for mountaineering and glacier skiing (split boarding, and snow shoeing too). For the summer season we will focus on glacier travel on foot and crampon, with discussions on skis, split boards and snow shoes, and the special challenges they bring, plus their advantages for glacier travel.
Cascade mountain travel often require crossing a glacier, learning to safety navigate them, along with how to avoid emergencies, and how to rescue yourself or others in an emergency, is an important skill set to develop. Practicing these techniques will make you a better mountaineer, back-country skier and climber.
We will practice crevasse self rescue and z-pulley rescue for glacier travel. With self-rescue practice techniques for glacier skiing/split-boarding (bring your gear) for those that want it. Belay Escape and rappelling exercises are also available. Running belay and rappel skills work stations also be set up. Participants will simulate hanging in a crevasse, wearing all of their gear, and practice self rescue by removing and stowing their gear while hanging on the end of the rope, and than ascending up the rope with the gear they carry. Practice set up and rescue a victim from a crevasse with a z-pulley rig. Practice workshop will occur at the Chopelas' property, east of Arlington WA on Saturday, it is open to all experience level participants, newbies welcome, and experienced climbers get to practice too.
This workshop will also include an intro to special problems of skiing or snow boarding on glaciers. The field trip on Sunday will need skis, split boards or snow shoes to get into a good practice area (depending on the snow conditions in the mountains). This will likely be at Mt. Baker, squak glacier. (weather permitting and assuming the road is open). The field trip is for those prepared and equipped, where we hike, ski, or snow shoe into a place for practice rope team travel and rescuing a victim out of a crevasse in the snow. We will return home late Sunday. This Saturday workshop is suitable and open to all skill and experience levels. The Sunday field trip is for those fit and equipped for a long day in the mountains in Alpine conditions.
It will be fun weekend to meet friends and practice in a low stress environment.
The workshop and field trip is free of charge, though a free will donation to support the program is gratefully accepted
