When we hear the word philanthropy, we think of charitable giving from great family fortunes. Laurel Hill has many examples of generous gifts by the one-percenters of their time. Notably, few women are identified as philanthropists based on their family fortunes. Many philanthropists were men who controlled the businesses or family fortunes. However, women in Philadelphia, some with access to wealth made their mark. More importantly, women of lesser means gave back by contributing their time, limited money, or fundraising prowess to make lives better for the average person living at that time. From fabulous wealth that still funds projects to this day to small fundraising efforts that have had a lasting effect, this walking tour will show that everyone can give back and make a difference.
